Individual & Group (DBT)
Psychotherapy
I offer both individual and group psychotherapy. There are many definitions of therapy, but simply stated traditional talk therapy is based on two premises:
-
Talking things through with a skilled, objective, and compassionate professional alleviates distress.
-
It sometimes helps to have a fresh set of eyes on a situation.

Because a barista or bartender can dispense advice, my goal as a psychotherapist is to clarify and understand the patient's thoughts, feelings and goals, provide information, and encourage new experiences both inside and out of the consultation room. I have found that people have a great reservoir of internal wisdom, but may need some assistance in finding and making use of it.

The group therapy I offer is a DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) Skills Training Group. I lovingly refer to it as a Psychological Cooking Class. In each group, I teach a technique or skill, the group members experiment with it in their lives during the week. They then return to report on their experiences. The skills are then reviewed and either refined in more detail, or we progress to the next skill.

The full course consists of four modules: Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotional Regulation, and Distress Tolerance. More information on DBT can be found here.
